Tenth Division: Arcane Specialists

The Tenth division is primarily a collection of elite Kidou specialists that are trained to excel at their chosen vocation, mastering both Hadou and Bakudou. They are deployed in groups, sent in among other divisions as shock troops, to provide an extra boost as well as heightened defense. Because of this, the division emphasizes cooperation and cohesion with its fellow divisions at all times, in order to build and maintain that synergy in battle.

The Mitsudomoe

The mitsudomoe is a representation of the goals and tenets of the division. Symbolizing the coming together of forces to assist one another, it both represents the nature of kidou itself (a combination of study, practice, and spiritual power) and the objective of the division as a unifying force.

Division Techniques Edit

Signature of the TenthEdit

Upon initiation into the Tenth, a shinigami receives the division's signature mark. The location of the mark is up to the initiate, but it must be open to the air to use, and thus it is advisable to place it where it is visible or easy to reveal: many choose the back of one hand.

This mark is a circular incantation written in a mixture of languages and symbols. There is an open area in the center where the outer circle merges into the incantation of a single kidou, to be chosen by the initiate. The incantation spirals in toward the center of the circle, creating a hitotsudomoe. Once chosen, it may not be changed. The shinigami will have a probationary period of three weeks to decide which kidou they will specialize in -- at that point, they must choose a known kidou or remove themselves from the division.

The chosen kidou may not be greater than rank fifteen. This signature kidou is empowered by the mark of the Tenth and can be cast merely by calling out Hitotsu, Futatsu, or Mitsu: the spell requires no incantation or gestures. The kidou consumes half of the normal reiatsu and does not count against the user's kidou slots or threshold.

The mark will glow with the color of the caster's reiatsu when using the signature kidou. At 1000 Kidou the user gains a second Signature kidou, forming a futatsudomoe. Upon attaining 2000 Kidou, the user gains their third and final Signature kidou. These additional Signature kidou begin at different points in the circle but spiral toward the same end, forming the complete symbol of the division: the mitsudomoe.

In order to use kidou in open battle, it is necessary to maintain focus in combat. Training in Clearcasting helps to avoid distraction without blocking out what's going on around the caster. To augment the user's natural concentration, a small incantation is written in a rigid hexagon around the center point of the Signature. As such, it is extremely difficult for an enemy to interrupt an incantation, even if the shinigami is forced to move or to pause their recitation. This increased concentration improves the user's ability cast without the incantation, allowing the user to focus more power even without audible words.

Low Level

  • 1:1 User's Kidou:Spell Cost = 88% Power
  • 2:1 User's Kidou:Spell Cost = 100% Power

Mid Level

  • 1:1 User's Kidou:Spell Cost = 75% Power
  • 2:1 User's Kidou:Spell Cost = 100% Power

High Level

  • 1:1 User's Kidou:Spell Cost = 66% Power
  • 2:1 User's Kidou:Spell Cost = 100% Power

Numerous powerful symbols are formed into small serrations around the outside of the Signature. The wielder of this mark gains a deeper understanding of the connections between kidou, allowing the user to bind two separate kidou to cast them at one time. The caster may combine kidou of the same class -- hadou or bakudou -- by paying an additional 25% to the reiatsu cost.

Since Bakudou and Hadou are fundamentally different, it is more difficult to combine the two. The user may do so, but must pay an additional 50% of the normal cost.

Kidou that require four or more slots may not combine with others.

Shinigami who have devoted enough time to studying the interrelationships of kidou and reiatsu can reduce the effective level of the spells they know. A thin line of words of power arcs inward before weaving into the circle of the user's Signature and then arcs back outward on the opposite side. The user reduces the effective level by 1 rank per 500 Kidou, maxing at a reduction of 30.

For example, a user with 1000 Kidou would reduce the effective level of equipped kidou by 2 ranks. Hadou #31, Shakkahou would be treated as Hadou #29, which confers relative weaknesses (for barriers that rely on spell rank) but also relative benefits (such as the amount of required slots).

Actual spell cost remains the same.

Division Item Pack Edit

Ien - "Beyond"
Ien is a small crystal phial filled with a luminescent silvery liquid. The phial itself is remarkably durable for its size -- comparable to the average person's pinky finger -- but it is merely the container for the potent elixir inside. When imbibed, the liquid reacts with the Signature of the Tenth and temporarily increases the user's kidou threshold, allowing them to go beyond the normal limits of their skill level.

After drinking Ien, the user's maximum kidou threshold is increased by 10% for one round of casting (this does not restore reiatsu spent). Consecutive doses are ineffective.

Chomei - "Clarity"
Chomei is a thin silver chain made to be worn behind the ear. Optionally, it may be hung as an earring. The trinket is designed to detect and amplify audible incantations within a thirty-foot radius, allowing the user to clearly pick out the words of a kidou spell even if the caster is whispering or otherwise trying to hide the incantation.

It is still up to the user to recognize the spell, and Chomei cannot help against Eishouhaki ("Revocation of the Recited Poem").

Arrangements with Other DivisionsEdit

First Division: Tacticians
The members of the Tenth are to devise, form, and demonstrate battlefield tactics and formations while following the lead and command of a First division officer. This is both an exercise in leadership for the First division member and an exercise in discipline for the Tenth division members.

Second Division: Advanced Scouts
On request, Tenth division members will assist the Second via the casting of certain bakudou useful to their pursuits, including Glass Veil and Kakushi Tsuijyaku. In return, the Second division will assist in procuring texts on kidou and other arcane arts as needed, both generally for the Tenth division library and on a personal level when needed (at the member's own expense).

Third Division: Blitzkrieg Strike Unit
The Third and Tenth divisions will participate in joint training missions in order to perfect timing on tandem attacks. Additionally, the Tenth division will assist the Third with their efforts in Rukongai during peacetimes.

Note: Joint training is required to learn Mahoubai.

Fourth Division: Healing and Support
The two kidou-centric divisions have a standing two-way invitation to approach each other for private training in spell-casting. The Tenth is also expected to learn from the Fourth's battlefield experience in a supporting role.

Seventh Division: Enforced Criminal Service
The Tenth division will practice casting area-effect kidou among the Seventh division members. This training is to help the Tenth learn to minimize friendly damage while the Seventh members get an incentive to maintain some degree of discipline during open battle. Casters will use proximity to bloodstone walls to lessen the impact on the convicts.

Ninth Division: Research and Development
At the Tenth division's expense, the Ninth division will assist in setting the tattood Signature of the Tenth and all of its extensions. Also, the two divisions may collaborate or spread the workload on special item commissions.

Eleventh Division: Fearless Duelists
The Tenth and Eleventh divisions will participate in joint training sessions to promote confidence. The Tenth will be working to maintain focus in close combat while the Eleventh will be training to overcome spell-casting.

Note: Joint training is required to learn Clearcasting.

Twelfth Division: Tracking and Assassination
Arrangements have not been settled.
